Shoot a documentary inside a small, dark shaping bay while conveying the tradition, care and dedication it takes to be a surfboard shaper in the 21st Century.
This project came together quickly. We shot about 5 days of footage over a 3-week period in the winter of 2010. Jason Heinz invited us into his shop in Oak Bay, BC and Luke Holland did an amazing job of capturing the process in super low light. The doc goes all the way from Zyoji’s dream plans in his notebook through the foam blank selection, skinning with all sorts of specialized tools, boxing in the fins, glassing and finally taking it for it’s maiden voyage in Gonzales Bay. Darin completed several rough cuts and sound engineer Matt McKenzie worked some magic with a super-dynamic sound range in a short 12 minutes.
Zyoji appeared on CBC Radio’s “On the Island” show talking about the surge of paddleboarding on Vancouver Island and what it means to traditional surfing in Canada.
